Cold Climate Grapes

Tom Plocher, Grape Breeder, Owner of Plocher Vines
Wine Grapes for Challenging Climates Plocher Vines is a small business dedicated to the invention and introduction of new wine grapes that meet the needs of grape and wine producers for grapes that resist the challenges of climate change.

Owner, Tom Plocher, has been involved in viticulture since 1980. He has been developing new grape varieties for 25 years at his vineyard in Minnesota.

Hardiness to extreme mid-winter temperatures and spring frost resistance, combined with great wine quality, remain the stalwarts of Plocher Vines’ grape breeding program. However, over the past decade, our vision for grape breeding has expanded to include solutions to climate challenges such as bud injury from extreme transition season temperatures and berry splitting during extreme late season rainfall.

Our grape varieties are developed in Minnesota, but are growing successfully all around the U.S. and Canada.

Contact Plocher Vines or one of our partner nurseries to assist you in identifying Plocher-Vines varieties that meet your needs in these times of a challenging, changing climate.

Plocher Vines grape varieties are grown commercially in 25 states in the U.S. and three provinces in Canada. Commercial producers choose these varieties because they combine great wine quality with:
  • excellent mid-winter hardiness
  • resistance to early winter cold
  • resistance to late winter warm spells
  • late budbreak
  • thick skins
